You may have heard of something called healthy home remodeling. This is a fairly new trend in the interior remodeling industry. If you get a home improvement contractor to conduct a healthy home remodel, you are basically proofing your home from indoor components that could be affecting the health of its occupants.
Is My Home Unsafe?
There are times when some of the components of our home become a health risk. This could span from simple things such as the air quality, to the possible presence of contaminated material. There could also be issues with the structure of your home that could pose a risk of sorts to the occupants, or there might be members of the family that could have difficulty in terms of mobility around the property. For the purposes of brevity, we’ll be focusing on the two biggest concerns: air and contaminated material.
These aren’t all issues of safety, but healthy home remodeling also has the comfort of the residents in mind as well, although to a much lesser degree. So while a residential window replacement might help make the home more comfortable by improving its general energy efficiency, it doesn’t automatically make the change a healthy home remodel.
Air Is the Biggest Concern
In general though, the interior air quality of the home is the biggest concern. That’s because a lot of the health hazards that can be spread throughout the home are airborne. Allergens such as dust are only the tip of this iceberg; an old HVAC system has the capacity to carry dust throughout the rooms of your home, as well as spores from anything that might be growing throughout the system’s area of effect.
Exhaust for cooking spaces and keeping the air pollution from the outside world is also an issue being tackled by home renovation experts when they conduct a healthy home remodel. That’s because this can affect the overall comfort of the property’s occupants.
Chemicals in Old Properties
On the more alarming side of things, homes with old components might be host to a variety of hazardous materials. This includes radon, which can seep into your home through cracks and gaps throughout your home’s structure, and asbestos, which can be found in components of your home, especially if your home was built before the 70s.
These components can definitely lead to plenty of harm to your family. Radon is colorless and odorless, and is a serious carcinogen. Asbestos, meanwhile, can also cause some forms of cancer and lung diseases. These can be fixed with proper siding installation services. Just find a contractor that does this; they may need to have a few specialized licenses to get this done.
