Multi-generational homes are fast becoming more common for many reasons: cost of living, culture and aging-in-place among them. Given the range of age groups and the variety of the occupants’ needs, multi-generational homes have unique design requirements that should be factored in when planning a remodel. In this blog, home remodeling contractor Empire State Builders & Contractors shares these key design requirements:
Open Floor Plan — Multi-generational homes need a “common area” where everyone can gather for dinners, entertainment or to meet visitors. An open floor plan is ideal for such areas, as it allows expansion, and is accessible to both school-age children and wheelchair-bound grandparents. Take time to research and understand the guidelines of universal design, and apply its principles when planning your remodel.
Multiple Master Suites — A multi-generational home is bound to have more than one couple who will want their own private space. A second master suite, perhaps even a third, would be necessary. If the second couple happens to be elderly, the guidelines of universal design should again be applied. A knowledgeable bed and bathroom remodeling services contractor can help you design secondary suites that will suit the occupants’ needs.
Privacy — Another unique aspect of multi-generational homes is that privacy is not as easy to control, compared to typical family units. This means you will need to designate “areas” in addition to the aforementioned “common area” and individual master suites. For example, a designated play area can help prevent elderly family members from running into kids at play or stepping into their toys. A screen or folding partition in the patio allow for privacy.
Room for Growth — As the kids grow up, they may decide to stay home. Therefore, the house has to have room for potential expansion. There are rooms that can be converted into additional bedrooms, such as an unfinished attic, an unused room or the basement. A secondary suite, which may or may not be attached to the house (sometimes referred to as a “granny flat”) can be installed at a later date. The kitchen and bathrooms may also require expansion as the family grows.
