A properly-planned kitchen layout strikes a balance between ergonomics, utility and beauty. Remodeling and home additions contractor Empire State Builders & Contractors recommends taking the time to plan your kitchen and avoid the following common layout mistakes.
Not Taking the Kitchen Triangle Into Account
The kitchen triangle is your main work area, the three points usually consisting of the sink, stove and refrigerator. It’s designed for maximum efficiency in the kitchen, which means, ideally, the distance between any two points in the triangle should be between 4 and 9 feet. Too small and you’d be bumping into everyone else all the time. Too big and cooking can become tedious too quickly.
Narrow Passages Between Cabinets
If you’re planning on having a kitchen island, or a galley-style kitchen, there should be about 4 feet of clearance between them and the kitchen cabinets. They allow enough space to open the cabinets while providing free movement around the kitchen. Alternatively, consider open kitchen cabinets. It may require rebuilding new structure, so look for a contractor who offers carpentry services in addition to kitchen remodeling.
Choosing a Small Kitchen Sink and Placing It in the Corner
More than a few kitchens feature a small sink positioned in a corner spot, ostensibly to allow space for the stove and a bigger work surface. If you have one of these in your kitchen, you probably know how uncomfortable it is to use. If space allows it, have a double sink installed. It can make your kitchen work process easier.
Not Optimizing the Kitchen Storage Space
You can never have enough storage for your kitchen. One common design mistake is eschewing overhead cabinets in favor of aesthetics. As we first mentioned earlier, the point of a good kitchen layout is balance; sacrificing one aspect for another is not balance. A good kitchen remodeler can help you design an aesthetic kitchen design that doesn’t sacrifice kitchen storage.
